SRAM Rival 1 Hydraulic Disc Brake Overview

The SRAM Rival 1 Hydraulic Disc Brake combines a hydraulic road brake lever with a Flat Mount caliper for controlled braking on road, gravel and cyclocross bikes.

This version is supplied as a left-hand front brake with a 950mm hydraulic hose, following the standard EU brake configuration. However, the hoses can be changed to suit a UK-style configuration when installed with compatible SRAM components.

The hydraulic system uses DOT 5.1 brake fluid and a road-specific caliper design. As a result, it provides strong braking power together with useful modulation and low lever effort.

The brake rotor/disc is not included.

Braking Performance

The Rival 1 hydraulic system is designed to give the rider strong braking with controlled modulation.

Its road-specific caliper and piston ratio allow braking force to build progressively. Therefore, the rider can make smaller corrections without the brake feeling unnecessarily abrupt.

In addition, the lever shape is designed to provide comfortable access from both the hoods and drops.

Reach Adjust allows the lever position to be changed to suit different hand sizes. As a result, riders can set the lever closer to or further from the handlebar.

EU and UK Brake Configuration

This brake is supplied in the EU configuration, which means the left-hand lever operates the front brake.

The hydraulic hose arrangement can be changed when converting to a compatible UK-style setup, where the right-hand lever normally operates the front brake.

After changing hydraulic hoses, the system must be correctly bled and checked before riding.

SRAM Rival Technologies

DOT 5.1™

Heat is an enemy of any brake system. Therefore, improvements in heat management help the brake maintain consistent performance when temperatures rise.

SRAM found that DOT 5.1 takes significantly longer to boil than DOT 4 in its braking systems. As a result, it provides greater resistance to brake fade during harder or prolonged braking.

DoubleTap®

DoubleTap is SRAM’s road shifting technology. It uses a single shift paddle to control both upshifts and downshifts through different lever movements.

A short movement operates one shift direction, while a longer sweep operates the other. Therefore, compatible Rival controls can be operated from either the hoods or drops with minimal hand movement.

This specific left/front unit is the brake side of the Rival 1 setup and does not provide rear shifting. DoubleTap applies to the compatible SRAM Rival drivetrain controls used alongside it.

ErgoDynamics™

ErgoDynamics combines lever shape, hood design and adjustment features to improve comfort and control.

The brake lever is shaped to improve access from the drops. Meanwhile, the hood profile provides a secure hand position for longer rides.

Reach adjustment also helps riders tailor the lever position to their individual hand size.

EXACT ACTUATION™

EXACT ACTUATION is SRAM’s mechanical shifting ratio used with compatible SRAM road drivetrains.

It maintains a consistent relationship between shifter cable movement and derailleur movement. Therefore, compatible drivetrains can provide accurate indexing and straightforward setup.

This technology relates to the wider Rival drivetrain rather than the hydraulic braking function of this left-hand brake lever.

Reach Adjust

Brake lever position is personal because hand size, finger length and riding position vary between riders.

Reach Adjust allows the lever to be positioned closer to or further from the handlebar. As a result, the rider can set the brake lever for more comfortable and controlled use.

Yaw™

Yaw is SRAM’s front derailleur technology for compatible 2x road drivetrains.

The front derailleur cage rotates as it moves across the chainrings. This helps maintain its relationship with the chain and reduces the need for traditional front derailleur trim.

Yaw is part of SRAM’s wider road drivetrain technology and is not a braking feature of this Rival 1 brake.
