SRAM Force 22 Hydraulic Brake Overview

The SRAM Force 22 Hydraulic Brake combines a DoubleTap 2-speed front shifter with a hydraulic road brake lever and Flat Mount front caliper.

This version comes with a left-hand lever and 950mm hydraulic hose. In the standard EU configuration, the left lever operates the front brake. However, the hydraulic hoses can be switched when setting up a compatible UK-style configuration.

Force 22 combines mechanical 2×11-speed shifting with SRAM hydraulic braking. As a result, riders get precise front shifting and controlled braking from one integrated lever assembly.

Braking and Shifting Performance

The Force 22 left control performs two separate functions. The carbon brake lever operates the hydraulic front brake, while the aluminium DoubleTap paddle controls a compatible 2-speed SRAM front derailleur.

Therefore, riders can control both front shifting and braking from the same lever assembly.

The hydraulic brake provides strong stopping power with useful modulation. In addition, SRAM designed the lever shape for comfortable access from both the hoods and drops.

Reach Adjust also lets the rider change the lever position. As a result, different hand sizes can achieve a more comfortable braking position.

SRAM Force 22 Technologies

DOT 5.1™

Heat can reduce the performance of any hydraulic brake system. Therefore, brake-fluid temperature becomes particularly important during prolonged or hard braking.

SRAM found that DOT 5.1 takes almost three times longer to boil than DOT 4 in its systems. As a result, DOT 5.1 provides greater resistance to brake fade when temperatures increase.

DoubleTap®

DoubleTap is SRAM’s mechanical road shifting technology. It uses one shift paddle to control both directions of a gear change.

A short movement controls one shift direction. Meanwhile, a longer sweep controls the other. Therefore, riders do not need separate paddles for upshifts and downshifts.

The shifting mechanism also operates independently from the brake pivot. As a result, riders can shift or brake without one control interfering with the other.

On this left Force 22 lever, DoubleTap controls the compatible 2-speed front derailleur.

ErgoDynamics™

ErgoDynamics focuses on the contact point between the rider’s hands and the controls.

SRAM reshaped the brake lever to improve access from the drops. In addition, the hood profile provides a secure and comfortable hand position during longer rides.

The adjustable lever position also helps riders adapt the controls to their individual hand size.

Reach Adjust

Hand size, finger length and riding position differ between riders. Therefore, one fixed lever position does not suit everyone.

Reach Adjust lets the rider move the lever position to suit their hands. As a result, braking and shifting controls remain easier to reach from both the hoods and drops.

Yaw™

Yaw controls the movement of a compatible SRAM front derailleur.

Instead of moving only from side to side, the derailleur cage also rotates as it changes position. Therefore, it maintains a better relationship with the chain throughout the shift.

As a result, Yaw reduces the need for traditional front derailleur trim. It also helps provide more direct and precise front shifting.

ZeroLoss™

ZeroLoss reduces unnecessary movement between pressing the shift lever and moving the derailleur cable.

When the rider presses the lever, the mechanism engages the cable immediately. Therefore, the shift starts without a noticeable dead zone in the lever movement.

As a result, gear changes feel quicker and more precise.

The left lever controls the front derailleur. Meanwhile, the hydraulic section operates the front brake in the standard EU configuration.

For a UK-style brake layout, the hydraulic hoses can be switched during installation. However, the system will then require the correct connection, bleed and safety checks.

EU / UK Brake Configuration

This unit comes in the standard EU configuration:

However, riders who require a UK-style setup can change the hydraulic hose configuration.

After changing the hoses, the installer must correctly bleed the hydraulic system and check brake operation before riding.
